The moment collegiate dancers prepare for all year and sometimes their entire life for has been canceled. Hours of practice, blood, sweat and tears were put into this one moment. . . National Dance Alliance Collegiate National Championship. Teams from all over the country would have traveled to Daytona, Florida to showcase their talent as a team.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the NDA Collegiate National Championship were cancelled this year leaving many teams heartbroken. One Texas collegiate dance coach told Dallas Dance Fanatic that her team received a gold bid this past summer for nationals.
“The progress of my team has not always been there, and receiving this bid gave the team a huge confident boost. As a coach, the team doesn’t always see the time and emotion I put into the two minutes they get at nationals,” said the collegiate coach.
One team that was supposed to be headed to Nationals this year is the SMU Pom Squad. They have been racking up awards for many years along side the SMU Cheer team. Head captain and senior Hannah Morris has been looking forward to her last nationals all year long. Her thought on the cancellation really helps to put things into a different perspective:
“It didn’t hit me, until about a week after the announcement that I would never get to perform with my Pom team again. At the time, it just felt like just a temporary break and our lives would be back to normal soon. Not many people realize this, but Nationals is something we work for all year round. I remember saying at camp last summer ‘this is going to be our year’. While, it makes me sad that we won’t have that chance to prove that this year, my heart goes out to the rookies on the team. I remember my first Daytona like it was yesterday and it makes me sad that they won’t get to have that same experience. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. It’s a competitive environment, but also the most encouraging. As a senior and now pommie alumna, I am disappointed that I didn’t get to experience my last Daytona like I had hoped. However, I will always cherish the memories I made throughout this year with this team. If anything, this abrupt ending has taught me to be grateful for the things that I did get to experience and not dwell on circumstances out of my control,” said Morris.
With nationals cancelled, the National Dance Alliance still wanted to show appreciation of all the hard work, time and sacrifices the teams have made. During this week, NDA and National Cheer Association are conducting a social media showcase to allow these teams to show off their incredible skills.
